Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu has refused to appear before the Justice d K Trivedi Inquiry Commission set up by the Gujarat government to inquire into the mysterious death of two teenagers studying in a gurukul run by him .
In an application to the commission, Asaram Bapu has said that the Commission may either send a representative to his ashram in Sabarmati to record his statement, or record his deposition through video conferencing.
The commission will decide on Asaram's request on Tuesday.
Earlier, the commission had issed several summons to Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai to appeal for cross-examination, but the father-son duo had always evaded.
Asaram Bapu in his application sent through his lawyer B M Gupta has said that there had been two major acts of violence in 2008 and 2009 over this issue and it was "not desirable" for him to appear before the commission in person for deposition.
In his application, Asaram Bapu has expressed fear that there was a possibility of violence by anti-social elements if he is cross-examined by the Commission.
Gujarat government had set up the Commission in July 2008 after two students Dipesh Vaghela and Abhishek Vaghela were found dead in myserious circumstances on the bed of Sabarmati Ashram. Both of them were staying in the ashram.
